Gloria is a film about Gloria Lenhoff, a 32-year old
woman with developmental disabilities, who possesses surprising
talents. Gloria’s charm, warmth, friendliness and love
of music come through as we see her working in a sheltered
workshop, working as a volunteer at a pre-school and performing
as a trained accordionist and concert singer. Her parents
emerge as people who long ago came to terms with Gloria’s
deficits and who have spent the better part of 32 years cultivating
their daughter’s talents and assets. We see beyond the
façade of “handicap” to the many unpredictable
complicated facets of a Williams Syndrome personality. This
is a human-interest story about love, caring, nurturing, triumph
and hope, as well as a poignant lesson in perseverance and
understanding.
Williams Syndrome is non-hereditary and occurs at random and
can effect brain development in varying degrees, combined
with physical problems. Like Down's Syndrome it is caused
by an abnormality in chromosones, and shows a wide variation
in ability from person to person.
