Barriers abound in opportunities for post-secondary education
for young adults with significant intellectual disabilities.
Cassilly: How I Got To College is a compelling story
of a young woman who has overcome barriers and whose successful
participation in a community college has enhanced the quality
of her life.
Sara Banks - director
Sara has been producing independent videos since the early 70's
when video was shot on black & white portapaks and public access
was first made available to the community. She further developed
her skills by getting a BA at San Francisco State University
in Broadcast Arts and a Masters in film production at UCLA.
Her programs range from a feature length dramatic film about
AIDS produced in '82, several news magazine shows for cable
television, award winning documentaries and training videos.
She is currently working at the Center
on Disabilities Studies at the University of Hawaii, developing
a video curriculum that promotes the quality of life for persons
with disabilities. It has been her life's work for her videos
to be a voice for people who are forgotten or misrepresented
in mainstream media.
Jean Johnson - producer
Jean is Director of Community Training and Outreach at the Center
for Disability Studies, University of Hawaii. She has been employed
as a special educator, a provider of clinical services in audiology,
an administrator of programs for children and adults with disabilities,
a university professor, and a researcher.
