An unforgettable person, with exceptional artistic ability is the subject of this film. The conditions surrounding Vales’ learning disabilities are explained early on, and very soon we learn that somewhere along the way, he picked up the art of creating silhouettes by tearing pieces of black construction paper. Vales work is far from simple: the complexities of each portrait are astounding, providing a three-dimensionality rarely seen in the art form. In the final scenes of the film, Vales’ complex, multi-character silhouettes are animated by pixilation.

Gordon continues to make silhouettes for $5 each at a small Spokane, Washington music store.
