The film tells the story of a slowly developing intimacy between two shy people. We follow their mutual evasions, and how they draw closer only to draw back again. Each are faced with the other's unexpected behavior and curious quirks, which at the same time keeps them from being together while strengthening their mutual attraction.

Falco, who is unemployed, in his mid-thirties and listless, has one sole passion: riding the underground and listening in on the conversations around him. Instead of reaching out to other people, he stubbornly keeps his distance, preferring to stay on the outside, low-key and lonely.

This all ends when he meets Anja. At first sight she could not be more different: direct, quick and moody, her ambition is to become a photographer. With wild ruses and dogged persistency, she attempts to draw Falco out of his lethargy. However it soon becomes clear that in spite of her vitality, she is just as wary and isolated as Falco.

And when he finally opens up to her, she is faced with a choice: to pursue her relationship with Falco, or to make her ambition become reality.
